Filing a Vandalism and Graffiti Insurance Claim

Filing a Vandalism and Graffiti Insurance Claim

If acts of vandalism occur at your home, your immediate reaction is anger-and maybe fear. Of course, that is natural. However, you also will want to repair whatever damage the vandals caused. Therefore, depending on the amount of damage, you will file a vandalism and graffiti insurance claim.

Does Homeowners’ Insurance Cover Vandalism?

The good news is that a claim for vandalism is covered-in most, but not all, circumstances. For instance, if you came home from a weekend away, and the vandals spray- painted the side of your house and broke a few windows, your home insurance company would likely cover the cost of repairing that property damage under your comprehensive coverage.
However, if you went to your summer beach house in May, and hadn’t been there since Thanksgiving the year before, your home insurance company would not cover damage caused in your absence.

In fact, if your home is vacant for over 60 days, standard home insurance won’t cover acts of vandalism.

In that situation, you should either add a vacant home endorsement to your homeowners’ policy or purchase a separate vacant home policy.

Likewise, if you run a business out of your home, you may not be fully covered if someone vandalized your home business.

Therefore, if you are running a business out of your home, add a business property endorsement to your homeowners’ policy.

Auto insurance would cover any damage to your car.

Lastly, if a storm or fire damages your home, you must make temporary repairs to protect the property from vandalism. If you don’t, and someone vandalizes your already damaged home, a claim with your insurance company for the additional damage might be denied.

What Acts of Vandalism Are Covered?

Vandalism includes:

  • Graffiti/spray-paint
  • Arson
  • Breaking windows and doors
  • Damaging, shrubbery and trees
  • Removing signs

What Should You Do if Vandals Damage Your Property?

First, call 911.

Then, file a police report. Also, get a copy of the report for your insurance company.
Then, take pictures of the damage. Of course, you will send them to your insurance company.
Next, file a claim with your insurance company.
Furthermore, make any necessary temporary repairs. For example, board up broken windows. Secure broken doors. Since your insurance company will reimburse you, keep receipts for the repair work.
Then file a claim.

Of course, include the police report and photos of the damage. Also, get repair estimates from contractors so you know how much the damage will cost to fix.
